August 17, 2009 - A Series of Updates : The Variety Hour VLOG : Summer Adventures

The VLOG has been a huge hit this summer, bringing together the Variety Hour cast members from all over the country. I can't believe how many people started getting involved, and the lessons we all learned. YouTube is a mighty ferocious beast, and it takes a lot of cunning to get it to work to your advantage. Anyone can put something on YouTube, but it takes a lot more to get it out there. With multiple vloggers, there is a stronger opportunity to pull in different demographics to the core concept. Hence, my love for the Variety Hour format. Hopefully this will be another opportunity for alumni and undergraduate students to keep in touch through creative endeavors over time.

Check out some of the Variety Hour Vlog's on the YouTube Page.

Adventure 1 & 3: Lake Shenangoh, PA & Lake Tygart, WV

Since I've been living in Pittsburgh over the summer, I have joined a rag-tag team of adventurers that like to seek out random points around the western-Pennsylvanian wonders and West Virginian mountains. Lake Shenangoh is about an hour north of Pittsburgh, and has a recluse, abandoned swim area, with a nice sand beach and very clean water - we were the only four people there and had a blast. Lake Tygart was a better survival experience. Again, an abandoned swim resort on a beautiful lake. We hopped over the fence and set to find the perfect spot. We arrived at the swim area coast and headed towards something that was a little less run down. We ended up setting up camp at a rocky beach with a fire pit. I happily built my boy scout fire and we grilled omaha steak burgers on rocks around the fire pit.

Adventure 2

Every few summers or so, The Andrews' Family travels to a remote town in Maine where the hobnobbing of East Coasters is heard down the sound and echoes through the windows of local residents feeding the fireplaces for the cool foggy nights. The cocktail parties are endless, and the lobster only $3.99/lb if you know where the good spots are hidden. This picture sums up the entire time there.
